Catalysis

Industrial Proccesses

Organometallic catalysis is an extremely important process in chemistry that helps speed up reactions that would otherwise be extremely slow and, in some cases, it also gives an alternate pathway to the product, which can help increase the yield of the product. This process uses metal complexes as catalysts and is unique because of its ablility to regenerate the metal complex, allowing it to be separated and reused in future experiments. Some popular reactions/ processes that will be discussed are:

  • Monsanto/Cativa Acetic Acid Process
  • Ziegler-Natta Polymerization
  • Hydroformylation
  • Hydrogenation
  • Olefin Metathesis

Organic Synthesis

Organic snythesis refers to the proccess by which organic molecules are created and can create a wide range of products, anything from food grade polymers to pharmaceuticals. Organometallic complexes that will be discussed can be used to drive the reaction forward and help with selectivity to ensure the correct products are synthesized, which is very important in the drug industry. A few organic cross-coupling processes that are used to make various different medicines are:

  • Suzuki-Miyauri Coupling
  • Heck Reaction
  • Negishi/ Stille Coupling
  • Noyori Hydrogenation
  • Sharpless Epoxidation
