Robert Bunsen pioneered spectroscopy and organometallic chemistry, but his research on cacodyl chloride—an arsenic compound with an intolerable stench—blinded his right eye in an explosion and nearly killed him from arsenic poisoning twice. The Bunsen burner that bears his name was actually built by his mechanic, Peter Desaga.
