Drawing 2D Structures

You will be drawing many 2D structures throughout this course. Let’s start with a simple organic molecule called propane, which consists of three carbon atoms bonded in a straight chain.

Action
  1. Select the + icons "Add atoms and bonds" on the left, then choose the single bond tool ().
  2. Click once on the drawing canvas. You've just drawn ethane! Ethane is a two-carbon molecule.
  3. To create propane, click on one end of the ethane structure to add another CH₃ (methyl) group. You should now have a three-carbon chain, which is one way to represent propane.
  4. Remember, in the 2D editor, you can build more complex structures by clicking on existing carbon atoms to add additional bonds and groups using the bond tool and ring tool.
