Allyl and Vinyl Groups

The 2-propenyl group is often refered to by its common, the allyl group.  This is often confused with the ethenyl group (vinyl group), so be careful.  Examples of compunds containing an allyl group are given below.

We classify the carbons and protons on these groups as vinyl or allyl.

As we will see in the coming sections allyl halides and tosylates are good electrophiles in Nucleophilic Substitution reactions.
