Lab Lore

While working at Sandoz Laboratories in 1938, Albert Hofmann synthesized LSD-25 from ergot alkaloids and shelved it after finding nothing remarkable. Five years later, after accidentally absorbing a trace through his skin, he intentionally ingested 250 μg on April 19, 1943. His assistant escorted him home by bicycle—marking the world’s first LSD trip, now celebrated as “Bicycle Day.”
